The Horrific Budweiser Ad That Majorly Pissed Off Martin Scorsese
remember a few weeks back when the internet found that letter Martin Scorsese wrote to The New York Times in 1993 you know, the one in which Scorsese bemoaned the lack of cultural diversity so far as american movie-goers were concerned? problematically callow coverage of Fellini’s death was the chief impetus for Scorsese’s letter, but he makes certain to mention a willfully ignorant beer ad that was running at the time, one that precipitated the whole “cultural vegetables” non-dilemma by suggesting that movies without explosions are an effete chore.
well, the wonderful Cynephile has found the actual ad to which Scorsese was referring, and… hell, it’s so much worse than you think. not just the message of the ad, but also its sense of aesthetics. yeeeeesh.
To be fair, the Foreign sections at Blockbuster were pretty abysmal.

In brief: Brett Ratner said a well-established act in show business was gay. This flew through the Internet at the speed of, say, Oprah running. It even prompted an apology from Ratner but still that wasn’t enough.

So, what I’m driving at is this: stop being stupid. And I say this as a man who does a number of stupid things daily, but normally with the mind of “if I eat the fried chicken park parm sandwich for dinner, I really must counterbalance tomorrow with a set of healthy vegetables. Perhaps a salad or a pickled carrot dish!"
