Spooky 2 through 31

I did a really shit job at keeping up with a media log to celebrate a month of spookiness (or spoopiness). The only relatable horror films I saw in theaters at Geostorm (10/20) and the remake of Flatliners (10/6), which could depend on your definition of "horror." I've always been lacking when it comes to theme posts or trying to force myself to watch anything for the sake of it. Over time with streaming I've fallen into the "roach motel" of suggested videos and sidebar suggestions.

Looking back on my viewing habits I don't think I was spooked enough.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯= I have no clue what I watched that day but it was probably NCIS or the Food Network.

  • Flatliners (2017)

I didn't rightly care enough to hate it or walk out. It was an incredible endevour by the Toronto tourism bureau though.

  • Blade Runner 2049

One of my favorites from 2017 that didn't get into my top ten though it should. I've been against Denis Villeneuve after the one-two punch of Enemy and then Prisoners. Earlier in 2017, or maybe late 2016, Mubi was offering Incendies and Polytechnique. I skipped both of them. Sicario and Arrival were both fine to me, but something clicked when he's partnered with Hampton Francher, Michael Green and Roger Deakin.

  • The Void

I was really excited for this follow-up from the team behind Father's Day. It delivers for about 3/4 of the film through an unspecified cult, a hospital on lock down with minimal patrons and a giant tentacled thing chasing after the survivors.

  • "Dealings," Death Note (Animated Series, 2006)

I watched the original run of Death Note as was the norm in 2006 for hardcore weebs: cut up into three part uploads on YouTube and fan-subbed.

  • Yoga Hosers

I wish I could've seen this with Bilge's eyes.

  • Viral (2017)

This was a swing, a miss, the bat going into the stands and killing hundreds of people in a gruesome accident. This and Nerve came out around the same time but were the tale of the tape between Lionsgate and Blumhouse. Would the "bigger name" gamble work out over the "small production, high concept"? It sure would.

  • Splatter

This was a fun rewatch from "the old days of streaming." Ten years ago Netflix and Roger Corman put this show out over three weeks and let users vote on the outcome. Joe Dante directed this story of a wake gone wrong when a rock band frontman (Corey Feldman) leaves his assorted mourners with a cryptic message and means to his fortune.

October 11-

  • Four Brothers

I can explain. The Singleton remake has arguably one of my favorite sequences in a film: when Mark Wahlberg walks across miles of ice in nothing but an undershirt and thermals to throw hands.

  • Death Note (2017)

I thought it was fine considering it had been lingering around development for years, once had Zac Efron attached and might be the most remade manga-turned-anime-turned-live-action-turned-tv series-turned etc etc etc ever.

  • Black Mirror: Season 3, "Playtest"
  • Black Mirror: Season 3, "Shut Up and Dance"

October 13-

  • The Foreigner

"I have a great idea."

"Go on."

"A thriller set around present day London as a terrorist bombing reignites the strain after The Troubles."

"I like it, I like it."

"And then Jackie Chan is there. With Pierce Brosnan—who will just act without having to be a Bond rip-off."

"Here's a comically large sack of money with an American dollar symbol."

  • The Florida Project

asn't stoked. Go figure.

  • You All Are Captains

I completed Oliver Laxe's series in reverse order.

October 20-

  • Geostorm
  • Lucky

October 21-

  • The Conformist (1970)
  • Wolfenstein: The Old Blood

October 22-

  • Neo Yokio: Season 1, "The Sea Beneath 14th Street"

The line between nerdy parody, sincere homage and crunch time to deliver an animated project has never been harder to figure out than with this.

  • Message From The King

If you liked Black Panther this is an entire film where Chadwick Boseman tries out and finesses his accent directly before filming Captain America: Civil War.

  • The Sacrifice

  • Prevenge
  • The Void

I tried to convince a Spooky Brunch to watch The Void and it bombed so hard I rethought liking it.

October 30-

  • Stranger Things, Season 1: "Chapter One: The Vanishing of Will Byers"
  • Stranger Things, Season 2: "Chapter Eight: The Mind Flayer"
  • Stranger Things, Season 2: "Chapter Nine: The Gate"

Sometimes you just feel like skipping to the end to know what everyone's going on about.

  • The Future Perfect

This is legitimately one of the funniest multi-lingual story about learning language, crafting narrative and then dealing with the inevitable story formed by the process.

October 31-

  • Wolfenstein: The New Order
